What a terrifying experience!!!

Reporter »

“Miss Wilson, could you give us some details of your ordeal?”

Meredith »

“Well — there’s not all that much to tell.  I just did the only prudent thing under the circumstances.  Fortunately, everything turned out OK.”

Reporter »

“We understand that your sister, Miss Albright, was the first to relay the threat to you.”

Meredith »

“Yes, I was home alone when Jocelyn called.  I sort of knew that there was the potential for some problems but I had no idea of the scope.  I had been lying in bed reading for several hours.  You know, just taking it easy relaxing and I was really without a care in the world.  I had dozed off, but then Jocelyn called and I was instantly wide awake — and the situation scared the dickens out of me — and I had no more hung up the telephone when I heard the furious pounding on my front door!!”

Reporter »

“I’m sure that was quite terrifying.”

Meredith »

“Terrifying is a totally inadequate word!  I was petrified!  And Fauncy was, too!”

Reporter »

“Fauncy?”

Meredith »

“Yeah, Fauncy — Fauntleroy — my pet dragon.  He was quivering from head to tail — and then he started howling!!  I didn’t think it was possible, but I got even more frightened!!  I mean — when a dragon is scared — a dragon that is about as tough of beast as you could ever imagine — a dragon that wouldn’t hesitate to take on a full grown tyrannosaur — when he gets scared — well, you know you are REALLY in a bad fix!!”

Reporter »

“What did you do?”

Meredith »

“I didn’t know how to protect myself — all I could thing to do was to hide — I rolled off the bed and thought maybe I could hide under it — but then I realized how upset Fauncy was — and knew I couldn’t leave him alone, (he’s WAY to big to get under the bed with me,) so I looked around frantically for someplace safe — and then I heard the door to my balcony rattling!!”

Reporter »

“Your balcony door?”

Meredith »

“Yeah!!  I’d have really been a total basket case then — probably just paralyzed in fear — except that Fauncy was so upset — and maybe some ‘maternal instinct’ took over and I got really concerned about him.  He was totally frantic!!  I tried to calm him down, but there was just no way — I didn’t know what to do so I started shoving him toward the closet.  He was so fear crazed that he didn’t understand what I was trying to do for a moment, but then he got the idea and we both raced inside to the far corner.  I locked the closet door — I don’t know what possible good that would do, but I did it anyway when we went inside.  I keep an extra “sleep over” mattress stored in there for when I have an overflow of guests.  With Fauncy’s help we got it pulled to the corner and both of us hid under and behind it!”

Reporter »

“And then what, Miss Wilson?”

Meredith »

“Well, we both just shivered there under the mattress for a few minutes — and then I heard a noise out in the living room of the apartment — with the door closed and under the mattress, I couldn’t hear much — but then I heard someone pounding on the closet door — and shouting my name!”

Reporter »

“What did you do?”

Meredith »

“There was so much noise, I didn’t understand for a moment — then realized it was ROGER!!  I crawled out from under the mattress — raced to the door and unlocked it — and just sort of collapsed in his arms!!  And then Fauncy was there with us — and Roger and I were both hugging him to calm him down.”

Reporter »

“So Roger came to your rescue?”

Meredith »

“I guess he really didn’t rescue us, but that was how we both felt!!  Jocelyn had called him — and of course, he already knew what was going on .  Anyone would have known!!  From a practical standpoint, I don’t know what he could possibly have done to protect us — but just having him there holding us made both of us feel a zillion times better.  I’m always teasing the guys, and Roger in particular, about their total lack of any common sense, but — for him to venture out into that horrible, horrible, thunderstorm with all the wind, lightning, and hail to come ‘protect’ us might not show much good judgement, but it’s something I’ll always remember!  And Fauncy will remember, too!!  Everyone knows I’m a big ‘fraidy cat about storms, but Fauncy with all that titanium content in his bones and scales is really vulnerable to lightning!  That’s why dragons in the wild usually live in caves.”

********************

By the way, I’ve been getting a few real threats, (and a few gazillion groans,) regarding these little ditties!  As for you groaners — well — nobody says you’re required to read them.  And in regard to the threats — just remember that Fauncy may be afraid of lightning but he’s not afraid of anything else!!!
